Jon Panayi Giant Banana & Cucumber

Giant Banana & Cucumber

The brief

A client of ours asked us to make a giant banana to be used as a permanent display in Seven Dials Market, Covent Garden. It is used for social media moments and to act as a point of sale prop.

I needed a 2.4 metre giant banana prop making in a hurry, to add complexity, this wasn’t just a visual prop, members of the public would be posing with it as a photo op. Days later, the team were installing on site. Spur are my go to guys!

The Process

We sculpted the banana and cucumber in polystyrene and hard-coated them with fibreglass. They were painted and finished with a 10-year exterior grade lacquer. Both had to be fixed firmly in place at the market so we had to have metalwork within and bolts coming down so that we could fix them into the ground.

The Result

The giant banana prop was such a hit as it featured on hundreds of social media accounts, they asked us to make a giant cucumber prop a few months later. Our client loved the giant props, and both cucumber and banana sit in pride of place reminding all customers that Seven Dials Market is the place to go to buy fresh fruit and vegetables.

Laura, aka Mrs B, a well-known blogger, seen pictured sat on our banana, writes “Seven Dials Market only opened in September – it has been all over social media and rightly so.”
