Summer campaigns give retailers something every brand wants: permission to be playful. Whether it's a drinks promotion, a luxury shopping installation or an experiential pop-up, summer retail is all about creating moments that stop people in their tracks.
The best campaigns don't simply display products. They invite customers to interact, take photos and become part of the experience. From a prop maker's perspective, that's where the real challenge begins.
At Spur Creative, we've spent years designing and building props for seasonal retail campaigns across the UK and Europe. Every project has different creative ambitions, practical constraints and installation challenges. But they all share one goal: creating something memorable enough that people want to stop, look and share it.
Here are four projects that show how carefully designed props can help brands make the most of the summer season.
Giant Pimm's Glass That Became a Riverside Landmark

Nothing says British summer quite like a glass of Pimm's. When Stagecraft approached us, they needed a three-metre-high Pimm's glass to promote the launch of Pimm's Sundowner aboard the Tattershall Castle on London's River Thames. The prop had to look convincing at a giant scale while being durable enough for a busy outdoor environment.

We began by sculpting the entire glass in polystyrene before producing a full mould. The final piece was cast in fibreglass, with the stem reinforced using an internal steel structure to provide strength without compromising the elegant proportions of the glass.

Because the client planned to apply printed vinyl graphics themselves, achieving a flawless surface became a major part of the project. We spent many hours sanding, refining and priming every curve so the finished graphics would sit perfectly on the prop.

The result became a striking focal point overlooking the Thames, helping thousands of visitors notice the campaign while creating an obvious photo opportunity that extended the promotion far beyond traditional advertising.
Giant Gold Stilettos That Elevated Luxury Retail

Summer is one of the busiest seasons for luxury shopping destinations, making visual merchandising even more important.
Value Retail commissioned us to produce oversized gold stiletto shoes that would be displayed throughout their premium shopping villages across Europe. Although they appear simple at first glance, achieving a convincing luxury finish required careful craftsmanship.

Using a real shoe as the starting point, we created precision silicone moulds before casting each oversized shoe in fibreglass. The accuracy of the mould meant every curve, heel and profile remained true to the original design despite the dramatic increase in scale.

After extensive preparation and sanding, the shoes were sprayed with exterior-grade gold paint before receiving a gloss lacquer finish that added depth and richness to the colour.

For shoppers, the installation created elegant statement pieces that naturally drew attention through the retail environment. For the client, they reinforced the premium atmosphere while encouraging visitors to stop and photograph the displays.
Magnum's Giant Animal Heads Suspended Above Regent Street

For Magnum's "Design Your Own Magnum" activation, our client Hot Pickle needed six giant animal heads suspended above one of London's busiest shopping streets. The installation had to make an immediate visual impact while complying with strict Health & Safety weight requirements due to the thousands of pedestrians below.

When an external supplier failed to deliver usable CNC moulds just weeks before the deadline, the project could easily have fallen apart. Instead, we returned to traditional sculpting techniques.

Using projected artwork, plywood formers and hot-wire-cut polystyrene, we sculpted every animal head by hand before producing fibreglass moulds and final casts. Once cleaned, sanded and painted in Magnum's distinctive white, milk and dark chocolate colour palette, each head was mounted onto large framed structures complete with promotional graphics.

The finished installation transformed Regent Street into a giant piece of experiential advertising, proving that well-engineered props can be just as important as the creative concept behind a campaign.
Fun fact: the giant animal heads weren't the only props we made for Magnum. We also designed and sculpted some oversized Magnum ice creams.
Public Art That Encouraged Exploration

Not every seasonal campaign is about selling products directly. For the Amy Johnson Festival, we produced forty large fibreglass moth sculptures that would become part of a city-wide public art trail celebrating the pioneering aviator.

Each moth began as a sculpture by artist Saffron Waghorn before we created two-part moulds and cast every piece in fibreglass. After careful finishing and priming, the sculptures were handed over to individual artists who transformed each moth into a unique artwork.

Because many of the finished sculptures would be installed high on buildings throughout Hull, every piece incorporated substantial fixing points during manufacture to ensure safe installation.

Projects like this demonstrate how props can encourage exploration, increase footfall and create memorable experiences that continue throughout an entire season rather than existing for a single event.
What Makes Summer Retail Props Successful?

Across these projects, a few priorities consistently shape the design process.
Visibility
Summer campaigns often compete with busy high streets, festivals and outdoor events. Props need to be instantly recognisable from a distance.
Durability
Whether installed outdoors or inside high-footfall retail spaces, props must withstand constant interaction, changing weather and transportation.
Photogenic Design
Today's retail campaigns live on social media as much as they do in physical spaces. A successful prop naturally encourages visitors to take photographs and share them.
Efficient Installation
Large props are usually built in sections, allowing easier transport, safer handling and faster installation within tight campaign schedules.
Brand Accuracy
The props always need to remain true to the brand. The scale may change, but recognisable details are what make the installation feel authentic.
Creating Retail Moments That Last Beyond Summer

The most successful summer retail campaigns aren't remembered for their props. They're remembered because those props created moments.
Whether it's a giant cocktail overlooking the Thames, luxury footwear transformed into sculpture or enormous animal heads suspended above one of London's busiest shopping streets, physical installations give people something digital advertising rarely can: a memorable real-world experience.

Whether the brief involves experiential marketing, retail displays or large-scale public activations, our goal at Spur Creative is always the same: to build props that capture attention, support the campaign and leave a lasting impression.
If you're planning a summer retail campaign, brand activation or seasonal display, we'd love to help bring your ideas to life.
